The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics is progressing an Australian Government election commitment to evaluate the benefits and costs associated with the different approaches adopted by various jurisdictions, both domestically and internationally, to road trauma. The review will help inform further policy development and a collaborative approach to the issue.

The Road Trauma Review will inform the 2014 Review of the National Road Safety Strategy 2011–2020 which is a comprehensive review of the national strategy's priorities and actions being undertaken by the Austroads Safety Task Force.

An initial survey of road safety experts and stakeholders was used to identify potential measures to reduce injury and fatalities. This identified over 400 possible measures.

This workshop was held in Canberra on Friday 16 May 2014 to help refine and scope these potential measures to reduce road trauma and identify evidence to support effectiveness and the costs of implementation.

The results of the workshop will be a key input to the BITRE's economic analysis to determine which measures hold the most promise and are the most cost effective in reducing road crash trauma.
