About BITRE
The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) provides economic analysis, research and statistics on infrastructure and transport issues to inform Australian Government policy development and wider community understanding.
BITRE is part of the Data, Analytics and Policy Division of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.
BITRE holds unique aviation, maritime, road and rail transport data collections which are made available in a number of publication series. BITRE also publishes the results of individual research projects. Most BITRE publications are made available on this website.
BITRE employs about 30 staff, comprising economists, statisticians, modellers, social researchers and policy analysts.
The Bureau of Transport Economics was established by Cabinet in 1970. Its role was to gather and analyse information about the transport industry and transport services. Today this role extends to analysis of trends and issues relating to infrastructure provision.
