About BITRE
The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) provides statistical time series and research on infrastructure and transport issues to inform Australian Government policy development and wider community understanding.
The original Bureau of Transport Economics was established by Cabinet in 1970. Its role was to gather and analyse information about the transport industry and transport services.
BITRE holds unique aviation, maritime, road and rail transport data collections which are made available publicly. BITRE also publishes the results of individual research projects covering major transport and infrastructure issues.
BITRE is part of the Data, Research, Strategy and Net Zero Division of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and employs economists, statisticians, modellers, social researchers and policy analysts.
