Background

Mode-specific freight indicators are currently available in a number of publications from BITRE and other sources. However, this information is not easily available, making comparisons across transport modes difficult. There is also limited information on supply chain performance measures.

Objective

Develop a national freight performance framework and associated freight indicators.

Project update

BITRE are pursuing this work as part of the Inquiry into Freight and Supply Chain Priorities (including the development of mode-specific and whole of supply chain indicators). Some of these indicators will be available on an interactive freight data dashboard on BITRE's website–bitre.gov.au/dashboards and below.

State and Territory transport departments, through ATDAN, have agreed to share established core indicators and supply chain reporting to help inform the development of a national framework.

This work will compliment similar projects already underway by state transport agencies, such as the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Transport Coordination Plan. The plan was published in 2017 with an initial set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that align, where relevant and possible, to existing indicators used in TMR. The KPIs will be refined over time and results will be published on TMR's website every two years.
