Regional research
BITRE's Regional Research team investigates social and economic conditions in different parts of Australia. 'Regional' simply refers to any geographic area in Australia, from major cities to very remote parts of the country. Analysing by regions enables us to understand the distribution of particular phenomena - from cost of living (forthcoming) to social capital to economic growth.
Work to-date includes research into the spatial distribution of social capital, industry structure, education skills and qualifications, taxable income, skill shortages and public transport services. Area-based studies have included investment and water allocation in the Murray-Darling Basin, and drivers of economic growth in greater Sydney. Policy focused work includes research into government's role in regional development. These publications and databases are freely available on this website.
Current projects include investigations into the relative costs of living in different localities around Australia, reasons for Tasmania's recent economic growth, and the distribution of income support recipients and household wealth across Australia.
